Fungi from Eastern Cape maize

dataset
posted on 2023-01-26, 11:12 authored by Jenna-Lee PriceJenna-Lee Price, Neriman Yilmaz, Hannalien Meyer

This data focuses on fungi and mycotoxins associated with maize in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. In the Literature review, animal and human health implications associated with the consumption of the five regulated mycotoxins is provided in a table. Two photoplates (created using AffinityDesign) are also provided in the figures. The first shows different maize ear rots, while the second shows different maize storage structures. Other figures include the structure of various parts of a maize plant and different climate regions in South Africa (created using PowerPoint).

In Chapters 2 and 3, experimental data focused on identifying species using DNA sequence data. The different gene regions targeted for identification are provided in the respective tables. Fungal strains belonging to Alternaria, Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Fusarium and Penicillium were identified. The tables provide species identities, host and district location and GenBank numbers associated with the respective DNA sequence. The species distribution between districts (Chapter 2), and between ear rots are indicated (Chapter 3). These figures were generated using Excel and edited in PowerPoint. In addition, a photoplate (created using AffinityDesign) of ear rots observed in the Eastern Cape is provided.
