Parents’ and teachers’ understanding of play and learning : children’s development

The focus of the study was to comprehend parents’ and teachers’ understanding and practices of play and learning for young children using a qualitative case study research design. Case study research was adopted in the study being the best design for approaching the primary question. Convenient purposive sampling was used, selecting six parents and four teachers from middle-income areas around Pretoria as participants. Data was collected from participants using an open-ended qualitative questionnaire/telephonic interviews. The data analysis used was thematic analysis by highlighting emerging themes and subthemes, allowing the researcher to formulate findings. The study incorporated several aspects to ensure trustworthiness: transferability, credibility, authenticity, conformability and dependability.
