Perspectives of primary school children on disaster risk reduction and adaptation : flood experiences

The study explored the perspectives of primary school children on disaster risk reduction and adaptation strategies within Mamelodi East. This qualitative research employed photovoice and semi-structured one-on-one interviews to collect rich data, which aligns with exploratory case study design. The data collected in this participatory action research was analysed using the six phases of reflexive thematic analysis. A total of four themes emerged:

  1. Factors that contribute to floods in the community. This theme has two subthemes.
  2. Consequences of floods in the community. This theme has three subthemes.
  3. Systemic vulnerabilities and floods. This theme has three subthemes.
  4. Strategies to prepare for and respond to future floods. This theme has three subthemes.
