Progress in International Reading and Literacy Study 2021 Grade 4 learner reading achievement in isiZulu and English

These files can be opened via International Database Analyzer (IDB-Analyzer) in conjunction with the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) prescribed by IEA. The data includes information about contextual questionnaires from home, school, learners and teachers. Aspects such as gender, parental engagement, reading materials/resource available at home and school influencing Grade 4 reading achievement literacy performance. The study used a quantitative methodology with a secondary data analysis (SDA) for collecting and analysing the PIRLS 2021 numeral data was used a secondary data. This study made use of secondary data because it accessed data from PIRLS 2021 gathered by the Centre for Evaluation and Assessment (CEA) at the University of Pretoria in partnership with the South African Department of Basic Education. For PIRLS 2021, 18 assessment booklets were created to align with the group adaptive assessment design and were used to assess the reading literacy abilities of Grade 4 learners. Each booklet consisted of two passages, a literary passage and an informational passage. The study analysed learners' reading literacy achievement data gathered from the achievement booklets. These booklets consisted of constructed response questions and multiple-choice questions, which learners answered based on the texts offered
