Reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and neutralisation assay for orthobunyavirus detection in human and animal samples in South Africa
My research investigates the detection and surveillance of orthobunyaviruses, focusing on their impact on public health in South Africa. The researcher developed and optimised molecular assays for detecting Bunyamwera serogroup viruses in human cases of febrile and neurological diseases. Surveillance in animals identified the first detection of Shamonda virus in South Africa and emphasised the need for continuous screening. Additionally, researcher explored the epidemiology of Shuni virus in horses, revealing its significant seroprevalence. This study underscores the importance of molecular and serological assays in understanding and managing orthobunyavirus infections.
