The core word list represents the words used most frequently by Sepedi-speaking Grade-R learners from the Sekhukhune district during school activities. The list is compiled from speech samples collected through audio recordings of six Sepedi-speaking Grade-R learners within the Sekhukhune district during their regular school days. The recordings were transcribed and analysed to identify the most frequently and commonly used words. The list here represents 255 root words that were used with a frequency of at least 0.5% and a commonality of at least 3 (i.e., at least three of six children used the word). The 255 words in this list covered 88.7% of the composite speech sample of 19,316 intelligible words. The words are categorised by part of speech and also into content and function words. Content words are open-class words with lexical meaning, while function words are closed-class words that perform a grammatical function.
