South African composer and British librettist, discussing performances of femininity in the 2021 chamber opera 'The Apothecary'
This data set consists of the verbatim transcribed semi-structured interviews with the South African composer and the British librettist of the chamber opera 'The Apothecary', where they were interviewed via Zoom about performances of femininity in the opera. 'The Apothecary' was premiered in London at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in 2021. The composer (participant 1) and the librettist (participant 2) were interviewed about what inspired them to write the opera; their creative processes; their intentions for writing the opera; what felt important to convey musically in the opera; their views on gender roles within the opera; performances of femininity in opera; reflections on the South African contemporary opera scene; and feminist perspectives in the South African contemporary opera scene.
