The datasets presented are for the publication of a research dissertation. For this qualitative, multiple case study, interviews were conducted and recorded. The Appreciative Inquiry approach was applied in this study. The participants of this study were selected based on their high self-efficacy scores obtained through the New General Self-Efficacy Scale (NGSE) and their eligibility to qualify for National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) between the years (2010-2017). The data collected was analysed through the use of a software called AtlasTi. Categories were generated and themes were formed from the sub-themes of the study. The data provided are themes, sub-themes, categories and quotes of the data. The participants indicated in the documents were presented in pseudonyms in accordance to ethical research guidelines.
