The pharmacological competencies that the prospective dietitian, professional nurse, and physiotherapist in South Africa need to function as a healthcare practitioner

This multifaceted mixed-methods curriculum study, following Kern’s six-step medical curriculum development model, originated from the need to ensure that pharmacology competencies within dietetics, nursing and physiotherapy aligned to the unique worlds of work each healthcare practitioner. A scoping review-led national Delphi study for each grouping performed using experts in academia, professional societies and regulatory bodies, was complemented by focus group interviews and analyses of relevant documentation in use by the University of Pretoria as exemplar. Work-related competencies identified were refined to create a proposed national competency framework for each grouping to allow for focused, relevant and expected pharmacological competencies necessary for their education. Given the curriculum mapping, a broader understanding of the complexity of such curriculum design could be showcased, using Harden’s ten windows of the curriculum, which justifies the need for evidence-based curriculum reform.
