This research study employed a qualitative research approach, as it was deemed the most suitable approach, given the study’s focus on gathering people’s thoughts and understanding of the domestic automotive industry and the policies developed and implemented by the South African government. The primary data was administered and collected by using Microsoft Forms. The primary data was collected from South African automotive stakeholders, vehicle manufacturers, and component suppliers, as well as the officials from the Department of Trade, Industry, and Competition, by means of a self-administered electronic questionnaire. The collected primary data was analysed through themes, or thematic analysis, which is used to gather themes and find correlations between government policy and the performance of the South African automotive industry.
