The role of medicinal plants in tuberculosis research
This dataset provides a visual representation of the role of medicinal plants endemic to Southern Africa in tuberculosis research and management. The dataset contains a summarized depiction of the infectious cycle of tuberculosis, the host immune response as well as the justification of Mycobacterium smegmatis as a model organism for tuberculosis studies. Examples illustrating the process of biofilm development, water channel formation, structural and functional changes and the infamous quorum sensing mechanism are provided. Phenotypic characteristics of Salvia aurea and Sphedamnocarpus pruriens are visually depicted in this dataset with a focus on their geographical distribution and observable features. Quantitative results in figure format have been provided in the dataset addressing the inhibition of biofilm formation, anti-biofilm maturation, the elimination of pre-formed biofilms as well as the potential for cytotoxicity and drug-herb interactions of the extracts.
